Mountain Lions fall to 0-5 after loss to Humboldt State
CHICO, Calif. â€" Nick Weaver had 31 points but the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs menâ€TMs basketball team fell to 0-5 on the season with a 98-91 loss to the Humboldt State Lumberjacks Saturday at Chico Stateâ€TMs Acker Gym.
Humboldt State improved to 6-2 overall and 2-0 at the Carlâ€TMs Junior Mac Martin Tournament. UCCS finished the tournament 0-2.
Cole Smith added 17 points and nine rebounds for UCCS, while freshman Scott Sublousky had 11 points and a game-high eight assists. Frank McCollum had his first double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while also accounting for six assists and four steals.
Ernie Spada led Humboldt State with 26 points and Zac Tiedeman added 21. Kevin Atkins had 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The Mountain Lions hurt themselves with 25 turnovers. More damaging, though, was a huge disparity in free throws. Four UCCS players (Jordan McClung, Chris Fernandez, Smith and Steven Clements) fouled out as the Mountain Lions send Humboldt State to the foul line 46 times while managing just 24 attempts themselves. The Lumberjacks converted on 28 of those attempts compared to 19 for UCCS.
The margin of defeat was seven.
UCCS trailed by as many as 10 in the first half, but Weaver and Sublousky each had five points to lead the Mountain Lions on a 13-1 run that turned the 36-26 deficit into a 39-37 lead. A half that featured eight tie scores went into the intermission, fittingly, tied at 49.
Weaver had a free throw, a regular field goal and a 3-pointer to spark an 8-0 run that gave the Mountain Lions their largest lead, 67-58, with 13:46 remaining.
Over the next 4:31, UCCS was forced into seven turnovers and missed the only field goal it was able to attempt. Over the same span, Humboldt State had seven offensive rebounds â€" leading to 10 points in the paint â€" as the Lumberjacks went on a 16-2 run to take a five-point lead.
The Mountain Lions tied it at 81 after a Cole Smith putback with 4:35 left, but Humboldt State answered with an 11-2 run to build a 92-83 lead with just two minutes remaining.
