Jubic sports milk moustache

Incoming University of Colorado at Colorado Springs freshman basketball player Janean Jubic was awarded the SAMMY 2006 Milk Moustache of the Year Scholarship, the University learned Wednesday.

Each of the twenty-five winners received a $7,500 college scholarship, a spot in the SAMMY Hall of Fame in The Milk House at Disney's Wide World of Sports® Complex in Orlando and a starring role in a special milk mustache ad in USA Today.

The SAMMY award is sponsored by the 'got milk?'/Milk Mustache campaign and USA Today. SAMMY is given each year to 25 high school senior student athletes in recognition of outstanding academic performance, athletic excellence, leadership skills and community service.

For Jubic, the odyssey began when her brother, Sean, saw an advertisement for the contest in an issue of Sports Illustrated. With encouragement from her family, Janean completed the online application and though little more of it.

At least until a month ago.

“I was actually out practicing basketball when my brother called me,” said Jubic. “He was so excited. He said ‘Janean, you won.â€TM”

Only 25 of the over 51,000 applicants for the scholarship were chosen. A celebrity panel comprised of Jason Kidd, Mia Hamm, Tony Hawk, Michelle Kwan and Andy Roddick judges the finalists.

“It was overwhelming to be chosen as one out of 51,000 entrants,” said Jubic. “It made me feel special.”
