Search for new coach begins
The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs announced Tuesday that it had begun its search for a new men's basketball coach.
Former coach Lance Hammond was fired on Jan. 10 after posting a 2-38 record with the Mountain Lions. Interim coach Doug Schakel, a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Hall of Fame, will guide the team until the end of the season.
The search committee assigned to the task of identifying candidates for the position met for the first time on Monday. At that5 meeting, they discussed evaluation criteria, the search process and agreed to an aggressive timetable designed to have a coach hired by mid-March. The timing was believed necessary to allow the new coach to put together an effective recruiting class.
The committee is comprised of: Assistant Athletic Director Doug Fitzgerald - chairman; men's basketball player P.J. Forrest, Faculty Athletics Representative Charlie Shub; Faculty/Staff Representative David Moon, Women's Basketball Coach Jessika Stratton and community members Lynn Barry and Kent Freudenberg.
