Mountain Lion men win third game
The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs took the lead, lost the lead then won the game Tuesday night at Gunnison, Colo.
The Mountain Lions staked themselves to an 11-point halftime lead against the Western State Mountaineers, only to see the game tied with 4:15 remaining. Instead of folding, though, CU-Colorado Springs (3-11, 2-6 RMAC) rallied to a 71-66 victory.
Jack Bain again put up big numbers, leading the Mountain Lions with 25 points and eight rebounds. Jimmie Pack added 12 points, while Josef Cruz came off the bench to score 11 points while also leading the team with six assists and four steals.
Western State (2-13, 1-7) battled back to tie the game at 56 on a steal and layup by freshman John Campbell. After the tie, Western could only convert on 5-of-11 free throws over the final 4:15.
The Mountaineers went 16-of-30 (53 percent) from the free throw line in the game. It's a good thing they weren't making their free throws, since CU-Colorado Springs attempted only 14 at the foul line, making nine.
Bain and David Goodenberger each fouled out for CU-Colorado Springs.
Western State got 17 points and 11 rebounds from center Bly McGuire and 12 points from Nate Morris.
