Lady Mountain Lions continue pursuit of post season with win over Chadron State

CHADRON, NE - The UCCS women's basketball team played against the Chadron State College Eagles in the Armstrong Gymnasium in Chadron, Nebraska Friday night.

The UCCS women, coming off last weekend's sweep of Adams State and #6 Fort Lewis in which Freshman Abby Kirchoff scored 52 points in the two games to win the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week honor, needed a strong performance against the Eagles in order to keep their postseason hopes alive.  Chadron, however, has been a burr in the Mountain Lions' side in recent years including a 69-57 CSC victory over UCCS  in Colorado Springs back in January.

Fortunately for the Lady Mountain Lions, Jessica and Danielle Brown showed up in a big way.  The twin sisters combined for 35 points against the Eagles.  However, the clutch performer of the night award goes to Sammi Gentile.  With UCCS down 69-70 with 18 seconds remaining, Gentile pulled down a huge rebound only to be fouled.  After the Eagles tried to ice her with a timeout, Gentile calmly went to the free throw line and nailed both free throws to give the Mountain Lions the final lead and a 71-70 victory.

The win against Chadron provided a lift as UCCS moves toward the end of the regular season with a record of 14-11 overall, 9-10 RMAC. However, given the nature of women's basketball in the RMAC this year, the ladies still have work to do over the final three games of the regular season in order to ensure a spot in post season play.

The Mountain Lions will travel to Kearney, NE, tomorrow to play the UNK Lopers to finish their final, regular season road trip of the year.
